Wayne Thiebaud at John Bergruen Gallery
To contact us Click HERE
I had a client meeting this morning in Union Square. After my meeting, I took advantage of being in Union Square and headed to the John Bergruen Gallery on Grant Street. They are having a Wayne Theibaud exhibit there that I've been wanting to see, and it closes this weekend.
Here is an article from sfgate the describes the show.
You may know that I have a particular fondness for Wayne Thiebaud's art. I get especially excited when having a chance to see any of his original oil paintings. They are all so... delicious. :)
This show was pretty amazing - it consisted mostly of pieces that had been purchased by private collectors over the years, and a few others that are available for purchase. (price upon request, of course!)
What a joy it was to see these pieces. Since they are privately owned, you would not generally ever have an opportunity to see them in a museum or gallery.
The whole bottom floor was oil paintings, while the upstairs gallery space had pastels, water color, etc.,
An exceptional show, if you're in the area over the next few days. :)

Today's 9+ mile walk with Dick

Today's route
Dick worked from home today, and our schedules were both a bit on the slower side so we decided to take a few hours off and do a nice long walk. My team isn't doing any scheduled training walks this weekend (some of our teammates will be walking in the SF Avon Walk this weekend) so I wanted to get in a good long walk this week.
Dick requested a few bits of criteria for today's walk:
Roughly 8 miles
He wanted to explore the Presidio
He wanted a lot of stairs and hills
Well, let me tell you, I came through with flying colors. I remembered that my first walk in June of this year was a 8-mile walk through the Presidio, and I distinctly remember that it had a LOT of stairs. It's awfully handy that I keep all of my maps from our team walks and can refer to my blog for details! :)
We started out right before Noon. It was still overcast and foggy, but not too cold.
We got off to a GREAT start - the clouds and fog began to clear soon after we started, and the weather was just perfect.

here's the view from Lincoln Ave looking out towards the Palace of Fine Arts and Downtown
We walked along the Coastal Trail, underneath the Golden Gate Bridge.

View of the Golden Gate Bridge from the Coastal Trail
Dick had never walked along the Battery to Bluffs Trail before. He LOVED it! It was especially nice today as the weather was clearing up, and we were the only people on the entire trail. :)

Dick, walking down, down down the Battery to Bluffs Trail

Dick walking up, up, up the end of the Battery to Bluffs Trail
We continued up, up, up the Stairs to Immigrant Point Outlook. Dick thought those stairs were the toughest part of today's walk.
Somewhere along the road toards the Golf clubhouse (where we had our bathroom break) we got a little off track. Oh, well - just adding to our milage and adventure!

one of my favorite sculptures in the Presidio
We somehow managed to get lost (again!) after the golf clubhouse, but eventually found our way to Lover's Lane. :)
We walked up, up, UP Lover's Lane, to Presidio, UP Presidio and turned onto Lyon Street. Just as we turned, we came across a field full of goats! Now seriously, that's not something you expect to come across in San Francisco! Especially in Pac Heights!

GOATS in San Francisco!
We eventually figured out what was going on, when we saw a guy sitting on a wall near the goats. We asked him if those were his goats, and he said yes. There were 30 of them in total!
Turns out, they are hired goats, for a company called City Grazing. I guess you can hire this guy, and his goats, and have them graze on your land. Who knew?

City Grazing
We continued our way down Lyon Street, and walked DOWN (yay) the Lyon Street Stairs.

Lyon Street Stairs
We continued on over to the Palace of Legion of Honor. Dick had not been to the area since they restored it a couple of years ago, so it was really nice to see the restored areas with him.

We made our way back to Crissy Field, where we walked the remaining 1-1/2 mile along the coast back to the Warming Hut.

Harvesting Plums!
To contact us Click HERE
So, it turns out that we have a couple of large, mature plum trees in our backyard. We found out the hard way last year (the first year we lived in this house) when they kind of took us by surprise. :) All of a sudden, there were a billion of these little cherry-sized plums in the trees. The next thing we knew, they had all fallen, and the raccoons were having a party in our backyard.
This year, we were more prepared. We've noticed them as they grew all spring, and I've been diligently picking them up off the ground after they fall. (as to not invite aforementioned raccoons.) We started picking them last weekend, but they weren't quite ripe yet.
We went back out today and picked.... 24 lbs of plums! (Or, as my friend, Sandy calls them, "Chums" - Cherry-Plums!)
I bought a fruit picker, but it is meant for larger fruit like oranges or peaches. It did help us reach and grab for branches. And when I say "We" here is the set-up:
Dick is up on a ladder, grabbing the branches and stripping the plums off them. Gay Boyfriend and I are below, catching the plums in a sheet. :)
Later, Christopher got clever and tied one side of the sheet to the ladder, which made it a one-man job, instead of two. We're learning!
The tree in the back of the yard is even larger, with an intimidating amount of plums. They weren't quite ripe for picking yet, so we'll wait until next weekend to get them.
In the meantime, my friend, Linda, is coming over tomorrow and she's going to teach me how to make Jam out of the plums! Whoo Hoo!! Plum jam for everyone! :)

New (Retro) Glasses!

Remember my post from a couple of weeks ago about selecting new glasses? Well, they came in today, and they are pretty fabulous!
I didn't mention that Dick also had an eye exam that day, a new prescription, and also chose new frames.
Both of us ended up choosing pretty retro-styled frames. Very Mad Men. ;)
We went out to dinner tonight with Pete and Richard, and had the occasion to dress up. Here we are with our new retro glasses!

Of equal importance, I must show how incredibly cute my new glasses case is! Check it out: hot orange on the top, chartreuse green at the bottom, and hot pink on the inside. The case and glasses by themselves is a little work of art!

I wanted to get a picture of Dick and me, dressed in our retro garb with our retro glasses. We came home and asked our Gay Boyfriend to snap a picture. Just at that moment, Noe walked in. I picked her up, hoping we could get a full family portrait! She was surprisingly cooperative. I realized after we took this that this may be the first "family portrait" I have of the three of us. (without having to photoshop Noe in, of course!)
Good job, Noe!

Sunday's Route
Oh, my - between Saturday's training walk full of stairs, and Sunday's 12-mile walk full of hills, hills, and more hills, I was plenty exhausted by the end of the weekend! As my friend, Sandra, said, "Somehow saying 24-miles doesn't even begin to describe the quality of those 24-miles!" :)
We started Sunday's walk in the Presidio. After the first mile of our walk, we kicked it into high gear by walking UP, Up and UP Divisadero street! Trust me, nothing will wake you up quite like tackling Divisadero first thing in the morning!

The view at the top of Divisadero looking down to the Bay
We walked all the way down Divisadero, about 2.5 miles where it turned into Castro Street. We then made our way to Market, to Dolores Street, walked up a few more blocks to Clipper and then walked UP Clipper (a stretch I've driven many, many times, but never walked!). Oh, my. The many, blocks of Clipper to Portola is a slow, steady climb up several blocks. I'm not sure if I've ever walked such a long stretch of up-ness before! :)

The View from Portola/Market
Clearly, I was too tired to take many photos today. :)
Suffice to say, it was a beautiful day, a beautiful walk, and we were all plenty tired (but proud!) at the end.

Dinner at Grandma's House :)
To contact us Click HERE
One of my favorite parts about spending the day with my Grandma in Stockton is when she makes dinner, and I get to learn how to cook from her.
Tonight, she made a couple of things that I've made with her before (string beans and steamed fish) and one new dish, winter melon soup.
Grandma just went to China a couple of months ago with my cousin, Bruce, and his family. While she was there, one of the members of her family there gave her a large bag of dried winter melon. Apparently, they had a very large chinese winter melon that they couldn't eat in its entirety, so they dried a large portion of it, and gave it to her. I've had winter melon soup several times, but I've never watched Grandma make it.
I should post Grandmas's recipe's here sometime so I can reference them easily in the future. I'll get to that soon.
Here are some photos I took of tonight's' dinner.
Thank you, Grandma!
